Diesel Emissions Abatement Via Wall-Flow Traps Based on La0.8Cr0.8Li0.2O3 Catalyst

Nano-structured bulk Li-substituted La-Cr perovskites were prepared, characterized, tested in comparison with the reference LaCrO3. The progressive increase in the Li content of the catalysts induces an increase in the catalytic activity owing to the enhancement of the amount of weakly chemisorbed oxygen O-species, key players in the soot oxidation mechanism. However, beyond 20% Cr substitution with Li, part of this latter metal was segregated as LiCrO2. The best single-phase catalyst (La0.8Cr0.8Li0.2O3) was already active well below 350°C. Catalytic traps were prepared by in situ combustion synthesis within cordierite and SiC wall-flow filters on the basis of the above catalysts and tested on real diesel exhaust gases in an engine bench, fully confirming the encouraging results obtained on powder catalysts.

Development of an Improved Fractal Model for the Simulation of Turbulent Flame Propagation in SI Engines

The necessity for further reductions of in-cylinder pollutant formation and the opportunity to minimize engine development and testing times highlight the need of engine thermodynamic cycle simulation tools that are able to accurately predict the effects of fuel, design and operating variables on engine performance. In order to set up reliable codes for indicated cycle simulation in SI engines, an accurate prediction of heat release is required, which, in turn, involves the evaluation of in-cylinder turbulence generation and flame-turbulence interaction. This is generally pursued by the application of a combustion fractal model coupled with semi-empirical correlations of available geometrical and thermodynamical mass-averaged quantities. However, the currently available correlations generally show an unsatisfactory capability to predict the effects of flame-turbulence interaction on burning speed under the overall flame propagation interval.

Effect of Compression Ratio and Injection Pressure on Emissions and Fuel Consumption of a Small Displacement Common Rail Diesel Engine

The effect of variations of compression ratio (CR) and injection pressure (IP) on the emissions and performance of a small displacement common rail off-road diesel engine was evaluated. The operating point corresponding to the 5th mode of the ISO 8178 - C1 test cycle (intermediate speed / full load) was considered, since it represents one of the most critical operating conditions as far as exhaust emissions are concerned. The main effect of a reduction of the compression ratio, for a fixed injection timing, was found to be, as expected, an increase in NOx emissions along with a decrease of PM emissions, with a substantial redefinition of the PM-NOx trade-off curve; the choice of a proper value for the start of injection can therefore lead to a better compromise among pollutant emissions, although remarkable variations in BSFC and combustion noise must be taken into account.

Improving Misfire Diagnostic Through Coupled Engine/Vehicle Numerical Simulation

Numerical simulation can be effectively used to reduce the experimental tests which are nowadays required for the analysis and calibration of engine control and diagnostic systems. In particular in this paper the use of a one-dimensional fluid-dynamic engine model of an 8 cylinders high-performance s.i. engine coupled with a vehicle and driveline model to simulate the effects of misfire events on the engine angular speed is described. Furthermore, the effect of cycle-to-cycle combustion variability was also evaluated, in order to take into account variations in the combustion process that can substantially increase the engine speed fluctuations under normal operating conditions, thus hindering the misfire detection. Finally, a comparison with experimental data obtained on a chassis dynamometer was carried out. After this accuracy assessment, the numerical simulation could be used to analyze different techniques for misfire detection, thus reducing the required experimental tests.

CFD Analysis and Experimental Validation of the Inlet Flow Distribution in Close Coupled Catalytic Converters

The unsteady flow effects in two different close coupled catalytic converters were investigated in order to achieve a better understanding of the steady state experimental tests which are usually performed to evaluate a flow distribution. Firstly the validity of a CFD model was achieved through a comparison of some steady state simulations with the results of HWA experimental measurements. Several different formulations of the uniformity index, that were found in literature, were then compared, trying to highlight the strengths and shortcomings of each one. Further information was derived from a comparison of the two catalysts that were tested to achieve a general methodology that would be useful for future analysis. Finally, a new approach to evaluate the flow distribution using a steady state analysis was proposed by comparing the results of a transient simulation that was obtained for a whole engine cycle.

Fuel Consumption Measurement in I.C. Reciprocating Engines Utilizing Manifold Pressure and Engine RPM

An electronic instrument for the measurement of fuel consumption in reciprocating internal combustion engines for light aircraft has been designed, manufactured and tested. The operating principle of the measuring device is based on the simple, theoretically supported and experimentally verified observation that the fuel mass flow rate is almost exactly proportional to the product of the intake manifold air pressure “pc” and the engine revolution speed “n”. Therefore, only two sensors are needed, and no fuel pipe cutting is required for installation and operation. This feature represents a major point in favor of simplicity, reliability and safety. The aim of the instrument is to provide a fuel consumption indication which can be used during cruising. The instrument is not intended as a replacement for the usual on-board fuel level gauge, but can be used to integrate the flight information with the overall and instantaneous fuel consumption data.

Experimental Investigation on Soot and NOx Formation in a DI Common Rail Diesel Engine with Pilot Injection

The influence of pilot injection timing and quantity on soot, NOx, combustion noise and bsfc has been analyzed on a passenger car DI Diesel engine prototype equipped with a common rail fuel injection system. The investigated engine operating points were 1500/5, 2000/2, 2500/8 rpm/bar, which are quite typical of EC driving cycles. For each of these operating conditions, the pilot injection quantity was varied by up to 15% of the total injected quantity and the pilot injection timing was varied between 32° and 1° crank angle degrees. The principal combustion characteristics were determined on the basis of the heat release, and a thorough statistical analysis was performed to infer the correlation between the combustion parameters and soot and NOx emissions.

Effects of Timing and Odd/Even Number of Teeth on Noise Generation of Gerotor Lubricating Pumps for IC Engines

The paper presents experimental and theoretical investigations on a shaft mounted gerotor lubricating pump aimed at reducing radiated noise at high engine speed. Effects of noise generation identified as main sources are the fluid borne noise (FBN) that originates in unsteady flow and related pressure fluctuations and structure borne noise (SBN) as a result of pressure transients occurring internally, which cause vibrations of the pump case. To clarify the onset of large delivery pressure fluctuations detected at high pump speed (in excess of 4000 rpm), and validate simulation results (AMESim environment), experimental and theoretical studies have been performed.

A Linear Thermal Model for an Automotive Clutch

The paper presents a diaphragm spring clutch linear thermal model. The main model aim was to estimate the temperature on the clutch disc slipping surfaces. That objective was pursued through a linear model to overcome the memory and computing time problems required by models with a more complex structure. The model parameters were experimentally identified. The model was validated employing a test bench, considering shift transient different as far as energy dissipated, clutch disc wear, frequency of shifting, gearbox temperature. The model structure, the methodology adopted to identify the model parameters, the experimental results obtained are presented and discussed.

The paper presents an experimental study to investigate the relationships among diaphragm spring clutch transmitted torque, thermal phenomena during clutch engagement and clutch wear. The work describes the development of a test bench presented by the Authors in a former paper. The original techniques were developed to measure the desired magnitudes and to develop the experimental methodology to investigate the relationships. The main results were obtained considering different operating conditions, dynamics of thermal phenomena and clutch wear.

The Influence of Crankcase Clearance Volume on Two-Stroke S.I. Engine Performance

The performance of two-stroke spark-ignition engines is greatly influenced by the scavenging process The variation of the crankcase clearance volume has here been investigated as a method for engine-load reduction. This method allows the reduction of the load without throttling or only by partial throttling with a theoretical increase of the engine efficiency. A comparison of two methods (air throttling and crankcase clearance volume variation) has therefore been carried out. The reduction of pumping work, due to the use of the variable crankcase clearance volume, has not always caused a consequent reduction of the specific fuel consumption. This is mainly due to deterioration of the scavenging process and to the occurrence of pre-ignition which occur above all at light loads.

Turbulence Spectrum Investigation in a DI Diesel Engine with a Reentrant Combustion Bowl and a Helical Inlet Port

The frequency spectral structure of turbulence spatial components was investigated in the cylinder of an automotive diesel engine with a high-squish reentrant in-piston bowl of the conical type and a helical inlet port. A sophisticated HWA technique using single- and dual-sensor probes was applied for instantaneous air velocity measurements along the injector axis at practical engine speeds, up to 3000 rpm, under motored conditions. The investigation was carried out for both cycle-resolved and conventional turbulence components, as were determined by different wire orientations, throughout the induction, the compression and the early stage of the expansion stroke. The anisotropy of turbulence spectral structure and its temporal evolution during the engine cycle were examined by evaluating the autospectral density functions and the time scales of each turbulence component in consecutive correlation crank-angle intervals.

Speed and Acceleration Impact on Pollutant Emissions

This paper intends to analyze the simultaneous impact of speed and acceleration on exhaust pollutant emissions. For this purpose, actual driving recording were used. Kinematic sequences were randomly selected amongst the recorded data, in order to constitute a representative set of driving conditions. For each sequence, average levels of speed and positive acceleration were calculated. Instantaneous and integrated pollutant emissions were calculated using an existing emission model, developed for calculating pollutant emissions and fuel consumption as functions of instantaneous speed and acceleration. This model is based on instantaneous emission measurements on a chassis dynamometer using actual driving cycles, over a sample of 150 European cars. Emissions of CO, CO2, HC, NOx were analyzed considering the average speed and positive acceleration, for different categories of vehicles Diesel, conventional and catalyst vehicles.

The variation of turbulent flow quantities with engine speed has been investigated in the combustion chamber of an automotive diesel engine with a high-squish conical-type in-piston bowl and one helicoidal intake duct, at speeds covering the wide range of 600-3000 rpm, under motored conditions. The investigation had the main purpose of studying the engine speed effect on the structure of both cycle-resolved and conventional turbulence over the induction, the compression and the early stage of the expansion stroke. The low frequency component of the fluctuating motion was also investigated.

Influence of Late Intake-Valve Opening on the S.I. Engine-Performance in Idle Condition

This work has been carried out on a two-cylinder s.i. automotive engine and it investigates spark advance, air-fuel ratio and variable valve overlap for low emissions and low fuel consumption, with an acceptable cyclic irregularity under idle conditions. An original application of a variable valve timing system, based on a passive electro-hydraulic link, has been used for this purpose. The instantaneous engine speed and in-cylinder pressure have been measured and recorded by means of an acquisition data system that allows both the determination and the comparison of some cyclic irregularity indexes, under different engine settings, at idle. The optimum spark advance, air-fuel ratio and valve overlap, which yield the best compromise between fuel consumption and cyclic irregularity, under idle operating conditions, have therefore been pointed out.

A New Test Bench for HWA Fluid-Dynamic Characterization of a Two-Valved In-Piston-Bowl Production Engine

A new test bench has been set up and equipped in order to analyze the air mean motion and turbulence quantities in the combustion system of an automotive diesel engine with one helicoidal intake duct and a conical type in-piston bowl. A sophisticated HWA technique employing single- and dual-sensor probes was applied to the in-cylinder flow investigation under motored conditions. The anemometric probe was also operated as a thermometric sensor. An analytical-numerical procedure, based on the heat balance equations for both anemometric and thermometric wires, was refined and applied to compute the gas velocity from the anemometer output signal. The gas property influence, the thermometric sensor lag and the prong temperature effects were taken into account with this procedure. The in-cylinder velocity data were reduced using both a cycle-resolved approach and the conventional ensemble-averaging procedure, in order to separate the mean flow from the fluctuating motion.
